UNB's computer science faculty offers students the opportunity to conduct original research. Student research is supervised by faculty members, usually through a faculty supervisor. Students may make arrangements with a supervisor before starting their degree, or shortly after arrival. Selection of a research topic is done in collaboration with the supervisor. Most supervisors have research funding designated for specific projects.

Though master's students typically start in September, exceptions can be made for students with research experience and a prearranged supervisor and project.
Faculty work within these groups conducting their own research and Master's or PhD students may choose a research topic based on the research being conducted within these groups or on other criteria.
